2017 Give Back Award
Enercare Centre and Beanfield Centre
Diane Young, CEO, Exhibition Place
Introductory Speech by Ralph Scali:
The Give Back award celebrates the spirit of volunteering. Every year, CAEM recognizes a member organization who has contributed to improving their community by embracing initiatives designed, not for their own financial gain or recognition, but rather to better the lives of others.
This year’s winner supports a number of community programs such as the Toronto District School Board’s programs on renewable energy, heritage and environmental tours, to name a few but it is for their support of cancer research through the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation for which they are nominated this year.
Over the past five years, this facility has hosted the annual Meetings Industry Euchre Tournament (MIET). Along with a donation from its partner, Cerise Catering and Tourism Toronto, this event has grown to 185 people and raised $25,000 in 2016 alone. The events brings together event professionals who with the goal of raising money for cancer research while having a little fun with fellow euchre enthusiasts.
Its General Manager never hesitated or asked for recognition when the idea was presented to her and 5 years later, continues to fully support the evening and demonstrate the true spirit of Giving Back.
Join me in congratulating this year’s winner, the Enercare Centre and Allstream Centre.
Acceptance Speech by Dianne Young:
Good Evening Ladies & Gentlemen,
On behalf of the Board of Exhibition Place I would like to take this opportunity to thank both the CAEM Board and the Nomination Committee for this prestigious award.
What an honour it is to receive the “Give Back Award”.
I truly believe that our entire industry and the CAEM as a leader and representative of that industry are not recognized enough for how much the industry goes above and beyond to “give back” to our city and region. There are so many shows, events, and organizers that support a charity or foundation. CAEM every year sponsors the holiday dinner and the very competitive Food Drive with the transportation help of Lange, which results in thousands of pounds of non-perishable food donations to the Daily Bread Food Bank, and they also donate thousands to Kids Health Links Foundation.
As a City agency it is sometimes difficult to write a cheque; however, we find other ways to support those initiatives that make a difference in our community. Every year, Exhibition Place fund staff to participate in both the Becel Heart & Stroke Ride for Heart and World Wildlife Fund CN Tower Climb; we actively participate in the annual United Way campaign as partners with the City. The Board has policies to actually fund and support use of our grounds and buildings by charities such as the Becel Heart & Stroke Ride for Heart, Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes, Toronto Humane Society Adoption Event, and Walk with Israel to name a few, and they receive a charitable discount. One of our most successful charitable events was brought to us by none other than Sheila Wong and after just 5 short years the Meetings Industry Euchre Tournament has doubled in size and the money it raises to support cancer research through the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. By the way you too could be part of this event on April 27, 2017 at the Beanfield Centre at Exhibition Place. It’s a great evening, lots of food, fun, and of course friendly competition with your industry colleagues!
I would personally like to thank Exhibition Place staff for their professionalism, dedication, enthusiasm, and commitment to delivering ‘Great Experiences Every Day’, so each and every event is a success! I am very proud of our staff and what we do every day at Exhibition Place and what each of them do to “Give Back”.
Thank you and enjoy your evening.
