CAEM Weekly Update – September 3, 2020

Are You a CAEM Member?

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, our priority has been to serve as the voice of the industry and help the sector navigate the current landscape, as it is now more important than ever to foster a community of support. CAEM also recognizes that our work and success is made possible by the financial contribution from our dedicated members, Annual Sponsors and partners. Without their support, we would not be able to offer the initiatives or resources that we do, nor achieve the impact of our latest advocacy work and efforts.

While CAEM’s Updates and COVID-19 resources are currently available to the industry, CAEM is revamping members-only resources and encourages you to purchase a membership to access full member benefits, including access to job postings, member directories, discussion forums and more. Help fuel the Association and click here to become a CAEM member today.

Annual Sponsor Content

Connecting with Colleagues Over Coffee has become a new monthly tradition for industry professionals. Our last session, on August 19th, was powered by Premium Association Sponsor GES. During our first breakout session, Charles Rye, Tod Large and Tony Gallagher, CEM with GES Canada shared some of the key findings from their attendee survey on returning to live events, sparking insightful conversations among participants. For those interested in taking a deeper dive into the survey results, please click here to see the full insights report from GES.

What You Need to Know This Week

The CAEM Exhibition Recovery Taskforce is continuing to meet on a regular basis in regional groups. While advocating for the safe reopening of the exhibition industry is still the main priority, CAEM recognizes the detrimental impact COVID-19 has had on the exhibition sector. Our industry was among the first to be shut down in mid-March, and we remain one of the few industries still contending with a complete and indefinite shutdown of all business activity.

For this reason, the Exhibition Recovery Taskforce will be adding sector-specific government funding to our advocacy priorities. We will be meeting with other industry Associations including TIAC, TIAO and MMBC to develop a strategy and communication plan to advocate for sector-specific funding to sustain liquidity and support business solvency in the exhibition sector.

CAEM will continue to keep you updated on progress with funding advocacy.

Key Developments

Ontario

On August 22, 2020, the Ontario government announced that facilities can have up to 50 guests per indoor meeting room or event space within the facility. Additional information can be found here. While CAEM recognizes that this provides a path forward for some facilities to reopen, exhibitions remain prohibited at this time. The taskforce therefore remains committed to its mission to advocate for a safe and responsible reopening of exhibitions and has several meetings scheduled with different departments in government to continue engaging in meaningful dialogue with policymakers.

British Columbia

The BC Safe Reopening Guidelines were revised to include a section on Risk Assessment, based upon input from WorkSafeBC, who approved the changes but do not approve reopening plans. Their approval, however was noted in a letter on August 24th sent to Dr. Bonnie Henry as a result of a change to her gathering order whereby she stated that “Episodic Vending Markets” are not subject to posted limits. We have not received a response to our letter and while both Dr. Henry and Health Minister Dix have stated during a recent media conference that they will be holding the 50 person limits for quite some time, we continue to press for an answer to our request for exemption.
