CAEM Update – December 16 – Ontario Re-Introduces Capacity Limits to Meeting & Events Spaces

ONTARIO TO RE-INTRODUCE 50% CAPACITY LIMIT IN MEETING & EVENT SPACES EFFECTIVE 12:01AM DECEMBER 18TH

Yesterday, the Ontario government announced effective December 18th at 12:01am, indoor venues that can host more than 1000 people are being reduced to a capacity limit of 50 percent.

These venues include: facilities used for sports and recreational fitness activities; entertainment facilities such as concert venues, theatres and cinemas; racing venues; meeting and event spaces; studio audiences in commercial film and television production; museums, galleries, aquariums, zoos, science centres, landmarks, historic sites, botanical gardens and similar attractions; casinos, bingo halls and other gaming establishments; and fairs, rural exhibitions, and festivals.

This morning CAEM participated in a technical briefing hosted by the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries regarding these new measures.  In this briefing the Ministry shared that the new capacity limits will be in place for a minimum of 6-8 weeks and that they are presently working on the updated regulations which they expect to be available on Friday.  You will find the presentation deck from the briefing here  When the updated  regulations are available, you will find them here.

We will keep you apprised as more information becomes available and we will continue to actively advocate on behalf of our members and the industry as a whole.

If you have not done so already, please take a moment to send a letter to your MP to urge them to vote for Bill C-2 which includes the Tourism & Hospitality Recovery Program.

It literally only takes a minute and this action will make a difference!
