CAEM Update- June 1, 2021

  • CAEM is pleased to announce that our contract with public affairs firm, Crestview Strategy, has been renewed through the end of December 2021. The priorities laid out in this updated contract are as follows:
    • Continue our federal government advocacy for sector-specific funding as well as program extensions (i.e. CEWS and CERS).  Our focus will be at the Ministerial level.
    • Augment our federal advocacy with a media outreach and public relations campaign to raise additional awareness to our sectors’ struggles.
    • Assist CAEM in Ontario with re-opening and financial support advocacy.
    • Assist with platform development in anticipation of the federal election being announced.
    • Assist CAEM in developing a long-term, post-pandemic government relations strategy.
  • CAEM was pleased to be a signatory on a joint letter to the Federal Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, initiated by the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario (TIAO).  This letter was yet another opportunity to illustrate the clear necessity for extending federal support programs for hardest hit industries such as ours. Read the letter here.
  • The TIAO letter mentioned above is a perfect example of how CAEM continues to collaborate and align with other industry associations such as TIAC; Meetings Mean Business Canada; Conference Centres of Canada and the Hardest Hit Coalition to elevate our message and participate in broader advocacy work.
  • The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) has developed a petition on behalf of the events industry at large to lobby the federal and provincial governments regarding extensions to support programs and a clear re-opening plan for events.  The asks in this petition are aligned with CAEM’s advocacy work and as such it is worth your consideration.  You can find the petition here.

Since our last update, a number of provinces have announced their updated re-opening plans.  You can find the links to these recent announcements below.  Obviously, CAEM is very encouraged by these announcements as they represent significant progress in outlining a path to re-opening, however there are still questions remaining regarding capacity limits as well as protocols.  We are working diligently with the provincial governments to get clarity and answers to our questions. CAEM is well positioned in this endeavour due to the extensive work we have already completed on our industry Safe Re-Opening Guidelines.

  • Late last week we distributed TIAO's Ontario Tourism and Travel Business Support Grant Survey to our Ontario members.  If you were unable to access the Ontario Small Business Support Grant earlier this year, we encourage you to fill out the TIAO survey as we are working to expand the eligibility of this new grant to include trade and consumer show producers.
